okay, I will gladly accept this this interpretation if!!!— canon frankly admits that John is in love with Sherlock the same way Irene was.

I hope and hope, but … mostly against hope itself. Sometimes I have to read against the text just to keep my face from melting off.

I like this interpretation, but as others have said above, the show’s canon hasn’t outright stated that John loves Sherlock. (At this point, the teasing and playing with the subject is getting gross.) Also, this show’s “Sherlock is so special!!” attitude is either tiresome or unrealistic or both.

I am practiced enough in fandom that I know how to read against/totally ignore canon, thus I choose to believe this explanation because it pleases me. Also Irene + Ladies = good times always and forever.
